Scared of Being Lonely?

Loneliness is something we have all experienced at one time or another; perhaps because of the death of a loved one or because of a change in our lifestyles.

It is a negative emotion and so sometimes we can find ourselves putting off making necessary changes because we are afraid of the consequences, afraid to find ourselves dealing with loneliness.

However, there are ways that you can properly handle any situation to ensure that you are no longer scared of loneliness!

New job

Entering a new place of work can be an exciting prospect; there is usually the opportunity for promotion or an increase in pay but it can also be a daunting experience, especially if you are leaving a company you have worked in for a long time.  Consider that you can make a completely fresh start in your new job and show your co-workers what an amazing person you are.  Begin confidently and introduce yourself to fellow workers.   Make yourself friendly and approachable.  If those feelings of loneliness start to creep up on you, then remind yourself why you made the decision to move jobs.  It’s important to focus on the positives.

New Location

Moving to a new location is a big lifestyle change.  There can be lots of reasons why you chose to move but discovering that you don’t know as many people can be worrisome.  The best way to combat those feelings of loneliness is to get involved.  Visit the local restaurants, gym, parks, find local classes which are of interest to you.  New friends will not just fall into your lap; the only way to start to build a new social circle is to go out and be sociable.

End of a Relationship

When you have been with a partner for a significant amount of time, the loss of their presence, even when it is the right decision for the two of you, can be hard to deal with.  Until you are ready to start dating again, spend time with family and friends and ensure that you fill your hours with fun things to take your mind off the loneliness you might be experiencing.  Remember why your relationship ended and keep in mind that one day, in the near future, you will meet someone great again.

Death of a loved one

Although sometimes we know the death of a loved one is coming, often it can come as a total shock.  Of all the occasions when loneliness can hit, this can be the most painful.  Don’t close yourself off with your sadness, make sure you reach out to close family and friends and allow them to support you through the emotions you are feeling.
