Is There Such A Thing As A Coincidence?

From bumping into someone who looks exactly like you to stumbling across a family heirloom at a car boot sale, most of us will encounter a spooky coincidence from time to time.

However, is there really such a thing as a coincidence or do these odd scenarios actually have a deeper meaning? Here are just a few reasons why ‘coincidences’ may not be as they seem…

Coincidences may lead you to someone

Coincidences may seem like nothing more than unusual twists of fate, but they often exist to lead us to a particular person. This person might be a new friend, a romantic partner or even a long lost relative.

Here at Wishing Moon, we’ve heard some fascinating tales overflowing with coincidental encounters. For example, we recently heard this story from a woman called Kerry:

“When I was 9, I made a new friend in history class called Jessica. One day, Jessica invited me to her house after school. As we sat down for dinner with her parents and twin brother Tom, her mum asked me what my last name was. When I told her, she dashed off to the living room and returned a few minutes later with a photo of herself in hospital holding two babies. Beside her was another woman holding another baby. It turns out that I was born a day after Jess and Tom. Our mums had spent hours chatting to one another in hospital. To make the story even more magical, two years ago I married Tom and last month I gave birth to twins. Funnily enough, in hospital I befriended the woman in the bed next to me. I wonder if our paths will cross one day too!”

Kerry’s story really is an unusual one but as her marriage to her friend’s twin brother proves, their encounter was certainly no coincidence. Her friendship with Jess led her to Tom and sent her on a magical journey which could lead to further ‘coincidences’ in the future.

Coincidences may teach you something

Some coincidences aren’t as filled with joy as the one above. There can be times in life where we’re sent down a particular path only to reach an unusual coincidence at the end that, although unpleasant, teaches us a lesson. Life is a long journey filled with learning and development and so although these coincidences may be tough, they play a valuable role in our lives.

Coincidences may save you from venturing down the wrong path

It’s not unusual for us to find ourselves wandering down the wrong path in life. Sometimes, we may be completely unaware that the road ahead is not right for us. We may think that we know what’s best, only to discover further down the line that we should have explored a different route.

Thankfully, no matter what path we select in life, we have the opportunity to experience joy and happiness, even if there are some unfortunate hurdles along the way. However, sometimes, an odd coincidence may occur that saves us from going the ‘wrong’ way while pushing us in a promising direction.

For example, we recently heard from Alex whose chance encounter with a company manager in a coffee shop helped him to impress in a job interview. Here’s Alex’s story:

“With an hour to go until my job interview, I was waiting in line at a coffee shop. When the woman in front of me realised she’d forgotten her card, I handed mine to the barista and paid for it myself. Someone else had done this for me just a few months before, so I figured this was a sign to pass to kindness onto someone else! The woman was extremely grateful and before she left the coffee shop, she smiled at me and wished me a great day. Once I finished my drink, I headed off to my interview. I sat in the waiting room when all of a sudden I heard a woman ask: “Would you like a drink?” I looked up and it was the woman from the coffee shop. It turns out she was a manager at the company! Although she wasn’t conducting my interview, she made me a coffee and put a good word in for me. The next day I received a call from her to say that I’d landed the job!”

As Alex’s story shows, a chance encounter or unusual coincidence can steer us away from one path and down another.
