Self Love: 6 Great Ways to Be Kind to Yourself

Complimenting others and being kind to the people around you is something most of us do without even thinking, but when it comes to being kind to yourself, we find it much more difficult!

Think about what you would do if you had a friend or loved one who has had a bad day, or is going through a particularly difficult time. You would almost certainly do all you can to cheer them up and make them smile. You would empathise and listen to their feelings, you would give them a hug and offer kind words and advice to make them feel better.

If this person was you, would you treat yourself just as kindly?

For many of us, the answer is no. Instead, we think negatively, we judge ourselves harshly and end up feeling discouraged, upset, and hurt.

Self-love, and making an effort to be kind to yourself each and every day is truly one of the best things you can do for yourself. Not only will you feel happier, but your relationships will likely improve, you will be emotionally stronger, and your self-esteem will grow.

Loving yourself can be difficult to learn and adopt, but it’s so important to start being kind to yourself today! Take a look at these simple ways you can start making kindness to yourself an everyday habit.

‘Me’ time

Try and take some time out every day to dedicate to you. Do something that brings you joy and relaxes your mind. This can be taking as little as half an hour to listen to some music, read a book, have a relaxing bath, or practice meditation. Take yourself away from your computer, your emails and your phone and devote this time to you!

Take care of yourself

When we are busy or feeling stressed, we can forget even the most basic of things needed to take good care of ourselves. Remember to always take care of your body, get plenty of sleep, eat enough nourishing foods, give yourself breaks and drink plenty of water. Even these simple tasks are a small step towards being kind to yourself.

Praise yourself

If somebody does a job well or accomplishes something great, you are sure to congratulate them and say “well done!” When was the last time you did the same for yourself? It’s so important to recognise your own achievements, so next time you take a step towards your goal or are successful in a project, pat yourself on the back and say “well done, you did great!”

Appreciate yourself

Take two minutes each day to list three things you appreciate about yourself. Make sure you write them down or keep a note on your phone/iPad.

No matter how big or small, write them down. It could be that you’re a great listener, your kindness towards animals, or even how great your hair looks good today.

Do something positive

It’s easy to fall into a routine and your days can quickly start to feel boring or mediocre. Why not take one small step towards something positive? This will help to break the mundane routine and give your day’s new, exciting hope.

It can be something as simple as trying a new hobby, booking a trip or weekend away to look forward to, cook a new recipe, reach out to an old friend, or even research new ways to grow your career.

Be kind to others

If you are kind to others, you may find yourself being kind to you, too. Kindness is contagious! Small acts of kindness each day are good for you, so try brightening up somebody else’s day, today!
