Feeling nervous, tense and uncomfortable… sound familiar? For many, stress is a part of our everyday lives and has even been accepted as normal. It can be difficult to eliminate stress all together; however, there are ways we can learn to handle it so that it doesn’t begin to take over our lives.
This article by Lorane Gordon talks through six of the best ways to handle stress.
Awareness is key to dealing with your stress. We must learn to recognise and be aware of our feelings instead of accepting them as normal, and believing that we can do something about it.
Breathing exercises can be done anywhere and can help to avoid that awful shortness of breath feeling we get when feeling anxious and stressed.
The 4×4 breathing technique is recommended by Lorane. First, slowly breathe in through your nose to the count of 4, hold for the count of 4 then breathe out through your nose or mouth for the count of 4. Finally, hold again with no oxygen for the count of 4.
Acknowledge and feel your feelings
By becoming aware of your feelings, you can begin to handle the stress associated with the what-if questions that cause you fear.
Try not to ignore and hide what you are feeling, as this will never make the thoughts go away! If you learn to accept the feeling, you may find that the stress was not caused from the situation, but from not accepting it.
Take care of yourself
If you’re feeling stressed, take some time to yourself. Go for a walk, do something you enjoy or listen to some relaxing music.
